Honest, Practical, Style Advice

Frame by Frame – Choosing the right (sun?) glasses for you.

Styling your specs to suit your personality and features – Pretty much all of us wear some sort of specs, for the sun, reading, driving… so how do you get on when you’re choosing new frames?

I’m like a kid in a sweetie shop – I see lots of lovely frames only to be told that with my small face and dodgy nose (which really doesn’t like to hold a frame in place) there are about one or two I can opt for, neither of which I particularly Iike – help!

So here are some guidelines to help you on your way:

The 3 things to think about are your:

  • Personality
  • Colouring
  • Face shape

  1. First, think about your wardrobe, you want your specs to compliment it. Are you classic in your style and like to co-ordinate garments and accessories or a bit more dramatic, preferring to make more of a statement. Alternatively, you might have a more natural style, so would therefore migrate towards something like a wooden or tortoiseshell frame.

  1. If you’ve got soft features and light hair colouring, heavy dark glasses will be aging, go for something lighter and softer.

  1. Follow the line of your face – if you have curved facial features look for frames with curves. If your face is angled, like mine (pity I’m not smiling!), look for frames with angles.

But a word of warning – don’t replicate the exact shape of your face in the frames. For example, if you have a round face, softly curved or cat’s eye frames would be best and not round ones like the example on the left.

Choose frames that follow the arch of your eyebrows.

To enhance you facial features also think about the bridge placement on glasses because this can help to create balance.

When trying on frames ask those around you – get their opinion.

And finally, if you suffer from dark circles under your eyes choose thicker frames, which can hide these perfectly! (Don’t go for rimless)

Buying glasses can be a big investment, you definitely want someone who knows about ophthalmology; who can look at your face shape, pick up cues about your personality and guide you to the perfect pair. That’s why I’ve teamed up with Davis Opticians, a family run business that cares about how you look and feel in your specs and pride themselves on their customer service. https://www.davisopticians.co.uk/
