It can often be tricky to find that perfect dress that you know you’ll feel just right in and can wear again, so before you head to the shops or search through the internet, let me help by reminding you of some basic principles of what you should be looking for based on your body shape:
So, if you have an hourglass body shape –
Make sure you show off your curves, so go for a fitted shape with an open neckline. The vertical panels on this dress will work well to flatter your shape.
For a pear shaped body –
Keep the detail on the top and look for a high neckline (and there are loads around!) but avoid anything with a raglan sleeve. Look for a panelled or full skirt.
Inverted triangle body shape –
Keep it simple, no frills for you. Look for a darker colour on the top, with more detail on the bottom.
Straight body-line –
You should avoid flouncy fabrics that are too frilly, but most else should be ok and you could do something like this dress because the ruffles give the illusion of a curvier body and the fabric has some structure.
Apple body shape –
Keep the colour monochrome with minimal detail, empire style top with slightly A-line skirt will work well.
I can’t finish without mentioning the jumpsuit – they can flatter so many different body shapes so well worth trying a few on if you haven’t already. And there’s now quite a few retailers who’ve started to react to the ‘toilet’ issue which can be a bit tricky in them – they are offering a matching top and trousers that looks like a jumpsuit but also gives you the added bonus of wearing them again as separates. Also perfect if you need a different size top to bottom!
