Autumn/Winter Trends 2019

What should you be wearing this Autumn?

A word of caution, don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have to embrace all the autumn trends. Most wardrobes just need small tweaks, so think carefully about how and what you might want to update your wardrobe. What do you need and how will it work with the pieces you already have. Shop from your wardrobe first and be selective, dip into a trend that you know will suit you and your lifestyle.

Ok, lets start with colour, with autumn now well and truly on its way the shops are full of autumnal colours; lots of khaki and rust. Great if you have a warm skin tone – hey it’s your time of year. If however, you’ve got a cool complexion make sure to stick to Khaki on the bottom half and go for purple and aubergine instead of warm shades of rust. Khaki also ties in nicely with the military and heritage trend and fabrics around at the moment. And with each autumn you can always predict an upsurge of tartans and checks, which is a great way to incorporate a bit of subtle colour.

Here are some guidelines to steer you through what are the key trends this season –
For starters, I think there are going to be two interesting contradictory themes to look out for this autumn. The first is quite minimal, with sophisticated tailoring and sober suiting in, for example, grey flannel. Think silk blouses with a midi skirt and neat blazer. This trio could see your office outfit sorted. However, in contrast, you’ll also have flouncing feathers and sequins with retina-searing colour, worn head-to-toe. The first of these trends probably translating into our wardrobes much easier than the later!

However, one of the other biggest trends to think about this autumn/winter is leather (with vegan options), trousers in particular but also jackets, skirts and even dresses. (Well for me I’ll be wearing my leather skirt. Despite not buying any new clothes this year I can still be on trend, yay!)

Another strong trend will be oversized square shoulders. Think 1980’s power jackets, so time to dig out those shoulder pads and think puff sleeves! Pair with wide legged trousers. Talking of oversized, there will be lots of over sized coats so great to fit all your layers underneath, look out for teddy bear coats in faux fur.

There is also a grunge look emerging – oversized jumpers with chunky boots and floral dresses.

As to accessories, which are a great way to easily update your look, say goodbye to the mini bag, go for a super sized, larger than life tote bag, great for stuffing everything in but be mindful of the potential strain on your back! Last season I bought a pair of resin earrings and they were a great way to feel updated without having to really change your wardrobe.

Whilst there are obviously some new trends you will also see some favourites continuing too, such as leopard print. It proved very popular last season and is all set to continue, in fact it now seems to be becoming a staple in our wardrobes, just like black.
