What to style this autumn –
Well, autumn has well and truly set in, and now that we’ve packed away our
summer clothes for another year, it’s time to embrace new shapes,
colours, textures and pairings.
However, bringing your wardrobe up to date with the season doesn’t
necessarily mean adding to it. The beauty of forever items that have been
carefully thought through and invested in can easily be reworked to give you
a fresh vibe. Below I’ve given you some ideas to think about and hopefully
encourage you to find something similar in your wardrobe. You might find
that you end up with a shopping list for one or two pieces, but these might
be garments that need replacing because they’ve seen better days or are no
longer a good fit.
• The colour – come autumn we see a richer and darker palette, one
that represents the season. This year tones of wine and burgundy are having a big
impact. It’s a colour that can work well whatever your skin tone because you
can pair it with both greys and camels for a chic look. Alternatively, consider
tonal dressing for classic, polished elegance.
• The roll neck – this practical layer can work wonders this time of
year. A fine knit rollneck under a cotton shirt or tank (another item that
I’d recommend you consider as a great wardrobe staple) can be just the trick
on these chilly mornings and layering can be flattering for lots of body
shapes, creating a different balance to your look.
• Double denim – now this might make some of you cringe, it’s a bit
marmite, but a trend that’s endured and it’s an easy one to create from
what’s already in your wardrobe. If you’re going to give this a try, opt for
a darker wash denim and then look to add some texture into your accessories,
like a croc effect leather ankle boot or a suede western boot.
• Statement belt – I bet if you rummage deep enough you’ll find one in
your wardrobe that hasn’t been worn in a while. Get it out and wear it over
your blazer, knitwear, dress or coat. This season is all about the cinched
silhouette, so create a bit of waist definition.
• Retro trainers – before you move permanently into your boots make a
pair of coloured trainers your go to footwear option – a classic Samba or
Gazelle in an autumnal shade for a subtle pop of colour will go with
everything!
• Cosy cardigan – I can’t tell you how much I’ve worn mine – this is a
must! Whether your style choice is a chunky knit, oversized or a neat
cashmere, it is the ultimate transitional piece that will allow you to wear
some of your lighter weight pieces for longer. Wear over a classic T shirt
or throw over your shoulders, either way it’s so easy to pop on and off when
the temperature dial rises in the middle of the day.
