Honest, Practical, Style Advice

Need a new winter coat this year?

Thinking of investing in a winter coat this year – what should you be considering?

Buying a new coat for winter is likely to be a big-ticket item for most people. Aside from the obvious need for warmth, it’s a purchase that should last for several years. And what’s more, getting it right will be influenced by several factors. So, here’s six key things to consider before you go shopping:

1. Firstly, consider your lifestyle and what ‘job’ you need the coat to do –

Are you always in and out of the car? If so, you don’t necessarily want the bulk of a full-length coat, a jacket is probably going to suffice. Or something like this 2 in 1 parka from Hush which has a detachable quilted gilet – perfect for in the car and then you can throw on the parka for those other occasions –

2. Does it need to be shower proof? In which case a lined trench might be the answer or something like this croc trench from Phase Eight –

3. Also, think about your proportions. This year’s trend is for long coats and that’s certainly not going to work for you if you’re petite in stature. So, if you like this style which can be elegant, look at brands with petite ranges.

4. Consider your body shape – do you need to have structure to create a shape? If so, avoid any styles with raglan sleeves. Do you need show off your curves? In which case think about having a belted style. Of course, what you want to wear underneath also needs consideration – a chunky knit, jacket or just a blouse most of the time?

5. And what about colour? There are so many gorgeous autumn/winter colours around, from chocolate brown to shades of burgundy and red. Think about what will suit your colouring best and what you want it to go with – if you wear lots of neutrals a red could work well, giving that pop of distinction. Alternatively, if you wear more pattern, something like a chocolate brown would work better. Remember, if you do opt for a black, you’ve got to be prepared to have that lint roller to hand!

6. Finally, how much are you thinking of spending? That adage that ‘you get what you pay for’ is certainly true when it comes to winter coats. The higher the wool content, the higher the price tag but the warmer the coat.

So, as you see, some thought needs to go into this significant purchase before you head to the shops. Your winter coat is probably the item of clothing in your wardrobe that’s going to get worn the most (this and your winter boots), so you want to ensure you’ve got it right and feel good every time you put it on. This way you won’t be disappointed but will end up with a coat that you love and that lasts into the years ahead. By tweaking your scarf or the colour of your accessories to update your look you can be sure to follow next years’ style changes and create options.

If you want to make a statement, these red coats from Mint Velvet and Jigsaw will tick the box. Or if it’s petite you need have a look at Hobbs and Whistles –
